ABOUT US

OUR STORY

The Zambezi Society was formed in 1982 to lobby against a dam site across the Mupata Gorge which would have flooded the Zambezi Valley in the Mana Pools Area. The proposal was abandoned and Mana Pools-Sapi-Chewore area was later declared a World Heritage Site. Since then, the Zambezi Society has advocated for and delivered on numerous successful conservation projects and awareness campaigns.

OUR FOCUS

We maintain a basin-wide ‘watchdog’ role, advocating for and participating in conservation planning and sustainable development. Our operational focus (conserving protected areas, encouraging human-wildlife coexistence, supporting rangers, and informing conservation through research) is centred on the Zambezi Valley within Zimbabwe – where one of the worlds largest, contiguous areas of protected, unsettled, wild land has been set aside for natural resource conservation. The area is home to several National Parks, Safari Areas, World Heritage Sites, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, a RAMSAR wetland site of international importance, and an Important Bird Area as defined by Birdlife International.
